Buffalo City (South Africa), participant to the African Cities Program

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, is facing unusual weather events and coastal processes such as sea level rise, flooding, erosion, increased heat stress, and storm surges that exceed the heights of existing infrastructure.

In addition, the city is struggling to meet the demands of a growing population and economy while trying to alleviate poverty and reduce the impacts of climate change.

In response, the city initiated a climate resilience strategy in 2014, identifying projects aimed at promoting resilience.
